The U.S. Department of Education announces that the Verona School District and the YMCA of Dane County, working with the Sun Prairie School District, are among 15 school districts and groups in Wisconsin that intend to apply for $4 billion in Race to the Top grants. The Madison school district is sitting out this round.

The city of Madison announces that plans have fallen through for Urban Land Interests to develop a mixed-used project and parking garage on the 800 block of East Washington Avenue. Mayor Paul Soglin's $192 million capital budget for 2013 includes funding for a new fire station, neighborhood center and skateboard park. Soglin is also moving ahead on a public market, a pet project of former Mayor Dave Cieslewicz.
