Democrat U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin debates Republican challenger Peter Theron on the UW-Madison campus. Baldwin says the U.S. needs to get serious about curbing global warming, while Theron says any energy policy should emphasize nuclear power.
Emmanuel Usher, 20, of Madison, is sentenced to 10 years in prison for participating in the kidnapping and rape of a man in a Cottage Grove home last year. Usher and two of his accomplices believed the man had stolen money and drugs.
Dane County Judge Maryann Sumi tosses out the voter-registration lawsuit by state Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen. The suit sought to require additional checks on thousands of voter registrations before Election Day, but Sumi rules that Van Hollen did not show state or federal law was being violated. Van Hollen vows to appeal.

Michael Gableman, facing ethics charges for running misleading ads during his campaign, is sworn in as Wisconsin's newest Supreme Court justice. He refuses to comment on the charges, telling a reporter who asks for the third time, "See my response to question two, buddy boy."

Cristhian de Jesus Rosado-Lopez, 24, dies along with two others when he hits another car while attempting to make a U-turn on Highway V in the town of Vienna. His passengers, Veronica Gomez, 36, and her nine-month-old son, Cristhian, are killed, while the other driver is seriously injured. Police say Rosado-Lopez was drunk.

The Madison Common Council votes to double parking fines during snow emergencies to $60.
Dane County's Public Protection and Judiciary committee defeats a proposal to have the county spend $2.3 million in 2009 to buy emergency radios for municipalities. County officials want the municipalities to pay for the radios.
WHLK-FM (93.1), a classic rock station, switches formats to all hip-hop. This is the first time the Madison market has a hip-hop station with a clear signal, dawg.
Kevin Harris, 17, is tentatively charged with sexual exploitation of a child and child pornography, after he showed friends a videotape of himself and others having sex with a 16-year-old girl. The girl told police she did not know she was being recorded.
The Willy Street Co-op announces it will donate the services of its assistant manager, Wynston Estis, to the new Yahara River Grocery Co-op in Stoughton. The Yahara co-op, which opened this year, is losing about $2,500 a week and has already burned through its $50,000 reserve fund.
Scott Andruss, 18, of Madison, is sentenced to five years in prison for a string of armed robberies last spring. Andruss was one of the "bandana bandits" that hit six east-side businesses in five weeks. His accomplice, Curtis Langlois, 28, was previously sentenced to eight years in prison.

State Sen. Mark Miller, a Democrat, sharply criticizes Republican state Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen while introducing him at an event in Monona. Miller calls Van Hollen's voter registration lawsuit "entirely consistent with Republican efforts to suppress the vote in the upcoming election." (Read a report on the meeting.)
