A thief steals $10,000 in donated computer equipment from Walbridge School, a small independent school on the west side.
The state Ethics Board announces it has reached a settlement with incoming Supreme Court Justice Annette Ziegler. Ziegler admits she violated the state ethics code in handling cases involving a bank on whose board her husband serves and agrees to pay a $5,000 fine, as well as $12,000 to cover the board's legal costs. Another investigation, by the state Judicial Commission, is ongoing.

Jesse Albrecht, 31, is killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq. Albrecht was born in River Falls. He is the 73rd Wisconsin soldier to die in Iraq.
A 37-year-old construction worker dies from injuries he received the day before when he fell from a ladder at UW-Madison's Smith Hall. The man, who was not identified, was working on asbestos removal.
Madison resident Chong Thao, 22, is last seen by his parents when he leaves to go out with friends. He calls a few days later and tells his parents that he's having trouble with school and credit cards, then hangs up abruptly. He has not returned home.
Friday 5.18
The family of Scott Brown, 33, confirms that the Brookfield native was killed in Iraq. Brown becomes the 74th Wisconsin soldier to die in the war.
UW-Madison dedicates a plaque to Robert Fassnacht, the scientist who was killed when Sterling Hall was bombed by Vietnam War protesters in 1970. The plaque is on a wall facing a parkling lot between Sterling Hall and Chamberlin Hall, near the site of the bombing.
Saturday 5.19
The body of Wesley Schubring, 44, is found in Lake Kegonsa. Schubring had been missing for a week, after he apparently fell off his fishing boat. A preliminary autopsy shows that Schubring drowned, apparently by accident.
Tuesday 5.22
Mark Hamele, 57, dies of injuries sustained in a car crash earlier this month. Hamele was a former DeForest village president and a Dane County sheriff's deputy. He was facing felony drunk driving charges in connection with the Columbia County crash, in which his car crossed the center line and struck another, killing a woman and her two children.
Dixie White, 46, of Middleton, is sentenced to three years in prison for giving her 28-year-old boyfriend a prescription drug. Ryan Uekert died last year of an overdose of methadone, which is used to treat drug addiction and pain.
A 23-year-old man is shot and killed during a fight on the 600 block of State Street. Police have not identified the victim, nor the 31-year-old man they have in custody in connection with the incident. This is the second murder in Madison this year.
