Antibiotics that once effectively fought bacteria, such as E. coli, are no longer doing the job. Nationally, the Centers for Disease Control estimates that more than 2 million illnesses annually are caused by antibiotic resistance, resulting in 23,000 deaths.
The pharmaceutical industry has not come out with a new antibiotic since 1987 but UW-Madison researchers are stepping into the void. Mary Sussman wrote about their promising research in last week’s Isthmus. She spoke with WORT-FM producer Dylan Brogan about her story for the station’s In Our Backyard news program.
