One of the perks of being mayor is that you get invited to a lot of parties. This week, Mayor Dave Cieslewicz is slated to attend to-dos thrown by Lapham Elementary School, UW-Madison Chancellor John Wiley and the Madison Common Council, and maybe others that didn't make the official schedule. I wonder which one will be the most fun.
My bet is on Lapham. I've never been to one of the Chancellor's hootenannies, but the guess here is that they're probably pretty stuffy. Wiley is allegedly a funny guy and I'm sure that others in attendance can spin a good yarn or two, but nobody will be downing any flaming shots (correct me if I'm wrong, anybody). As for the Common Council soiree, it would be fun to think that common ground is discovered in the glow of yuletide glee, with alders setting aside political agendas for a night of detente. How adorable would it be to witness polar opposites Judy Compton and Marsha Rummel conspiring to take over the DJ booth or Zach Brandon learning some dance steps from Satya Rhodes-Conway? More likely: The place is deserted by 9:00.
But at Lapham, the decorations will no doubt be delightful and the entertainment enthralling. See, kids get the holidays and put all their energy into making them fun. If you've ever seen a group of second graders belt out "Frosty the Snowman" you'll know what I mean.
