So Mayor Dave Cieslewicz is headed to the south of Germany -- Madison's sister city, Freiburg, to be exact. Not a bad destination. It's located in the very southwest corner of the country, very near Switzerland. It's also on the edge of the Black Forest.
More importantly, at least to Mayor Dave's enviro side, is that Freiburg is considered a green city. Germany's Green Party does better in Freiburg than in any other part of the country (sound familiar?). According to Wikipedia:
Freiburg has an extensive pedestrian zone in the city centre where no automobiles are allowed. Freiburg also has an excellent public transit system, anchored by a continually expanding web of tram routes known as the Straenbahn.
One final interesting nugget about Freiburg: National Hockey League star Dany Heatley, who played for the Badgers from 1999 - 2001, was born there. That fact has caused German hockey fans, of which there are admittedly few, to speculate that Heatley could play for Germany, instead of Canada, in international tournaments.
