On Thursday morning, Mayor Dave Cieslewicz will attend an event that has been eagerly anticipated by many westside residents for years now. The Lussier Community Education Center, otherwise known as the spanking new building located just to the north of Memorial High and Jefferson Middle School on Gammon, will officially open its doors.
The new facility will be a vast improvement for programs that previously operated out of the Wexford Ridge Neighborhood Center, which was basically a collection of three apartments across Gammon Rd. from the new space. The building includes 12,000 square feet of space, flexible multi-purpose classrooms, a technology lab, food pantry and community recording studio. In many ways, it's like a westside version of the Warner Park Community Recreation Center.
In other words, it's a clean, well-lighted place that is impressive in appearance and welcoming in atmosphere. For kids who need a place to go after shool and neighborhood residents looking for stronger bonds with the community, these things are important.
