City business will be about as busy as can be for hizzoner over the next week, owing largely to the annual budget battle royale that starts Tuesday evening. Though the Wednesday and Thursday meetings of the Madison Common Council are only scheduled "as needed," there's no doubt that will be a marathon of late nights like those in years past, if not more so due to the added controversy of proposed higher bus fares and wholesale cuts across many programs long considered safe.
The daytime itinerary for Mayor Cieslewicz is likewise busy, filled with the regular array of city meetings, phone calls, and lunch dates, along with a groundbreaking for a new fire station on the far west side and a stop by the Greater Madison Chamber of Commerce policy meeting, one only a few months before the next round of aldermanic elections.
One thing that's missing from the schedule, at least in comparison to the last few years, is the hunting trip immediately after the budget battle. That's not an option this weekend, though, as the white-tailed deer general gun season in Wisconsin doesn't open until the following Saturday, November 22, its traditional pre-Thanksgiving spot on the calendar.
The mayor does have an animal-related event this weekend anyways, though, as his family's dog Calvin will sit down, and maybe roll over, for an "interview" with My Dog Magazine, a promotional program of the Goochi Poochi Pet Salon & Boutique here in Madison.
