Longtime south-side activists Stuart Seffern and Debbie Loiselle are killed when their single-engine plane crashed during take-off south of Chicago. Seffern, 50, and Loiselle, 52, had been active in the Burr Oaks Neighborhood Association for the past decade, with Seffern serving as its most recent president.

Reed Rogala is sentenced to 12-1/2 years in prison for running a drug operation in Madison. Rogala, 33, of South Orange, N.J., is a former UW student. He is also linked to Amos Mortier, a Fitchburg man who allegedly distributed Rogala's marijuana and who disappeared four years ago.
The state Department of Corrections confirms that a female prison guard at Oakhill Correctional Institute is under investigation for misconduct. A department spokesman will not reveal what the guard is accused of doing, but says she was placed on leave in November.
Candidates for the Madison Common Council and Madison School Board file to run in the spring election. On the school board, incumbent Arlene Silveira faces a challenge from businessman Donald Gors.
