David Roberts, 21, of Waunakee, is sentenced to 15 years in prison for beating his 11-week-old son to death in February. Roberts told police he hit the infant because he was stressed.
UW-Madison researcher Janet Hyde publishes a study in the journal Science that shows girls' math skills are equal to those of boys. Apparently, there was some doubt.
More than 5,000 people swarm the Alliant Energy Center to see the Dalai Lama, who is making his seventh visit to the Madison area.
A state appeals court denies Gordon Sussman a new trial. Sussman, the former owner of Rutabaga paddle store, was convicted in July 2005 of repeated sexual assault of a child. He is serving 13 years in prison.

Jeremy Levin, 30, a lobbyist for the Wisconsin Medical Society, and Brad Wolbert, 49, a hydrologist with the Department of Natural Resources, file papers to run for the Dane County Board. The two will face off in the fall election, to replace Dave Worzala, who was appointed Dane County treasurer this summer.
Dane County Judge Maryann Sumi orders an apartment building known for its drug activity to be emptied and closed. The building, at 910 W. Badger Rd., was where Cassandra Mays was fatally stabbed on July 15.
Brittany Zimmermann's parents drop their federal lawsuit against Dane County and the former 911 Center operator who failed to respond to a call for help the day Zimmermann was murdered. The family could still file a new lawsuit in state court.

Jerome Frautschi pledges another $3 million to help bail out the struggling Overture Center. Frautschi originally gave $205 million to help build the arts facility, with the stipulation that a trust fund be used to provide revenue for operations and maintenance. But a failing economy has caused the trust fund to dip below the $100 million needed.
Madison police arrest David Floyd, 67, who is suspected of having planted what may be a bomb in front of Brocach Irish Pub on the Capitol Square. The same man is suspected of hanging a backpack, with an apparent explosive device inside, from a tree in front of Walgreens the day before. The Dane County bomb squad destroyed the backpack safely.
