Gerda Lerner, who helped pioneer women's studies in higher education in the 1960s and '70s, dies at 92. A historian and author, Lerner created the UW-Madison's doctoral program in women's history in the early 1980s. She retired in 1991.

Tammy Baldwin is sworn in as Wisconsin's first female U.S. senator. She is also the first openly gay senator to serve in the Senate. Shortly after leaving the Senate floor, Baldwin reportedly bumps into U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan near the elevator, and the two share a bipartisan hug. Aww.

Dane County Judge Peter Anderson - who had earlier issued an injunction against using dogs to hunt wolves in the 2012 season - rules that hunters can use them in 2013.
The Wisconsin State Journal reports that 2012 was the warmest year on record for Madison, with a mean average temperature of 51.3 degrees. The city's average monthly mean temperatures were above normal every month except September and October.

The Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism reports that Kevin O'Malley, the neighbor who was struggling with Paul Heenan shortly before police shot and killed him on Nov. 9, disputes aspects of the police account. O'Malley says he shouted to Officer Stephen Heimsness that Heenan was a neighbor, not a burglar. He also says he did not see Heenan lunge for the officer's gun, as police claim.

U.S. Rep. Mark Pocan (D-Madison) announces he's been appointed to the House Budget Committee and named an assistant minority whip. Also on the committee is U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Janesville), Pocan's ideological opposite.

Bettsey Barhorst says she is retiring as president of Madison College and will remain in the job until her successor takes over, likely by July 1. The college's board has begun a search for a new president.
Authorities charge Scott Suby, 19, with reckless child abuse for allegedly firing a pellet gun near his toddler niece, who was hit with several pellets on Dec. 31. When the girl's mother later took her to the hospital, doctors found six pellets in the girl's body.
