The state Department of Natural Resources announces it is backing off plans to reduce environmental education programs at the MacKenzie Environmental Center near Poynette. The DNR had planned to shift the center's focus to hunting and trapping programs, but many people complained. The center hosts 16,000 students a year.

The body of 93-year-old Edna Biederman is found outside a Verona assisted-living facility where she lived. The Dane County Medical Examiner's Office later determines she died of hypothermia. The state Department of Health Services is investigating.

The State Journal reports that UW-Madison is entering into a unique partnership with Madison College. Students who transfer from Madison College to UW, but drop out after getting 64 credits, would qualify for an associate's degree from the college. The two schools are among the first in the U.S. to establish this kind of relationship.

Mayor Paul Soglin names Katherine Cornwell of Denver as the city's director of planning. Her hire is contingent on Common Council approval.
The Solidarity Sing Along marks its two-year anniversary. The group gathers to sing protest songs in the Capitol Rotunda at noon on weekdays.

A jury convicts Victor Benitez, 19, of several homicide charges for driving under the influence in a crash that killed four of his friends in Fitchburg on Feb. 18, 2012.
The 4th District Court of Appeals declines to put on hold a ruling by Dane County Circuit Court Judge Juan Colas from last September, declaring major parts of Act 10 unconstitutional. The court did not address the merits of Colas' ruling, and the appeal continues.

The State Journal reports that Gov. Walker has included $9 million in his budget for an $18 million plan to build two barns at the Alliant Energy Center that could be used year-round. The plan would replace 11 barns at the facility and expand the space by 100,000 square feet.
