Madison Police announce that they have found officer Stephen Heimsness did not violate any department policies when he shot and killed an unarmed man who approached him on Nov. 9 on the east side. Police also report Heimsness will be returned to active duty. See Scott Gordon's report.
U.S. District Judge William Conley sentences William O. Diederich, 61, to three years' probation for calling in bomb threats to the state Democratic Party headquarters during the 2011 protests. Diederich's lawyer writes that his client suffers from mental and emotional problems and "was ill-equipped to cope with the volatile political atmosphere in Madison." He wasn't the only one.

The Associated Press reports that Gov. Scott Walker has received numerous threats in his first two years in office, especially during the Capitol protests early in 2011. More than a third of the roughly 65 threatening messages came from the same person. The Department of Justice has no open investigations.
The state Climatology Office determines that Lake Mendota has officially frozen - the same date as it did last year.
Liberal radio veteran John "Sly" Sylvester announces that he'll be back on the air starting Feb. 4, after landing a gig with the Monroe-based WEKZ 93.7 FM. WTDY laid off its news staff, including Sly, in a format change in November. See Scott Gordon's report.
