Buskers come through
Thanks to Rich Albertoni for focusing on last weekend's Busking for Books fundraiser for Literacy Network ("25 Gigs, One Hour," 4/16/10), and to Jason Joyce and Andy Moore for their help organizing the event. We raised $1,782.60 in just one hour - more than one dollar for every minute of music performed on all 27 corners of State Street!
The support comes at a critical time for our organization - times are tight and our programs are in great demand. We help Dane County families achieve some increasingly difficult goals: financial independence, good health and greater involvement in community life.
I would like to thank the 113 musicians and volunteers who participated in this amazingly successful effort. Their dedication, talent and enthusiasm demonstrate the civic-mindedness that makes me proud to be a Madisonian.
Jeff Burkhart, executive director, Literacy Network of Dane County
The mayor's fan mail
Poor Mayor Dave. We voters just don't seem to understand how "competent" he is (Cieslewicz opinion column, "Competence and the Central Library," 4/9/10). Perhaps the next time we citizens are up for reelection, he could support an effort to replace us, so Dave can have the kind of city that Dave wants for Dave.
Or maybe Dave could pretend that he is elected to serve the people, not a handful of businesses, and consider our needs and wishes, for our city.
