Help for women vets
As a follow-up to David Medaris' report on veterans ("Coming Home," 7/2/10), I am pleased to inform you that an additional resource, "Women in Boots: Marching Home," is now available to download for free on the Wisconsin Women's Network website: www.wiwomensnetwork.org. The pamphlet, originally issued in 2006 and recently updated, lists employment, health and other resources available to Wisconsin's women veterans.
Of the approximately 427,000 veterans in Wisconsin, about 28,000, or nearly 7%, are women. Women returning from Iraq and Afghanistan face unique challenges - they often don't know where to turn for health or reemployment-related issues or where to find other women veterans they can relate to. We hope this pamphlet will help.

Humans, the real pigs
After reading Bill Lueders' article about pig wrestling at fairs ("Is Pig Wrasslin' a Crime?," 6/25/10), I kept thinking of the comment [Stoughton Fair event organizer] Rob White made - that the pigs have never told him they don't enjoy being greased and tackled.
Whether they do or don't is somewhat irrelevant, because it implies that we would change our behavior if we knew they didn't. No one pretends that tigers like jumping through hoops of fire or bulls find a bullfight pleasant.
Apparently the only thing that matters is what humans like, and I for one despise the use and abuse of animals for our trivial amusement.
