At last, a worthy successor to former Ald. Ken Golden emerges. During his time on the Madison Common Council, Golden was known for his amusing memos and joke-y resolutions, including one inviting the Dixie Chicks to become the Dairyland Chicks after they got in trouble for criticizing President Bush.
Now, neighborhood activist Lisa Subeck has joined Golden's comedic ranks by encouraging Madison to declare war on the Dutch. Subeck's proposed resolution blames the Dutch for developing "biological weapons of mass destruction capable of killing even the most resilient American elm trees."
The biological weapon? A fungus called Dutch elm disease, which recently infested a landmark, 140-year-old American elm on the 500 block of West Gorham. The tree is scheduled to be cut down later this summer.
Subeck says Madison should retaliate by attacking Holland "until all of the country's biological weapons are destroyed."
Finally, a real plan to combat terrorism.
