According to lore, it was Steve Jobs himself who chose "New Soul" from her second album, thus handing the French-Israeli singer songwriter an instant, international audience. Blessed with an unsettlingly pure voice and an incredible agility at composition, Naim sings in Hebrew, English and French, presenting a collection of ballads that meander through folk, pop, and world music with a melancholic frugality. Trained as a classical musician, Naim has written music for films and has toured through much of the world. The renowned Guarneri String Quartet "is among the most revered and enduring ensembles of its kind in the world" (National Public Radio). It has circled the globe countless times since its 1964 inauguration, playing in the world’s most prestigious halls.
The quartet has been featured on many television and radio specials, documentaries and educational presentations and starred in the full-length film High Fidelity - The Guarneri String Quartet.
This is a concert not to be missed - the quartet has announced its retirement at the completion of the 2008-09 season. Born in Portugal to Cape Verdean parents, Lura sings of that string of ten volcanic islands scattered in the ocean off Senegal. Her father hails from Santiago, the largest, greenest, most African island of Cape Verde, and her mother from São Nicolau, the island that produces the best grog (Cape Verdean rum). Lura’s music is of and from this former Portuguese territory, the one that gave Cesaria Evora to the world.

Well, here's your chance to combine your three great loves. Isthmus is teaming up with the Susan G. Komen For The Cure Foundation to bring you: Women Rock For The Cure.
On Friday, October 10, music venues throughout Madison will feature performers that honor women. Each venue will donate a minimum of $1 per admissions charge to breast cancer research.
Throughout the night, an Isthmus street team will be stopping by the venues to take pictures and hand out free stuff!
