Overlooked by many in the furor before, during and after Joanna Newson's performance at the Madison Pop Festival a couple of weeks ago was the opening performance by Bill Callahan. A singer-songwriter who also records as Smog, Callahan played a song from his 2005 album A River Ain't Too Much To Love in front of an overflowing Great Hall at the UW Memorial Union.
The four minute concert clip follows below.
Callahan and Newsom share a label, Drag City, and have been performing together throughout the autumn as the harpist's star has risen thanks to critical acclaim for her new album. The Madison Pop Fest generated quite a bit of discussion (not to mention reviews, photographs, and now videos) thanks to the high profile and musical breadth of its performers; more details about the 20006 edition of the festival are available here.
