Six months ago today, word broke that the New Recruits announced their demise. One of Madison's most entertaining rock bands, NR formed in 1999 and quickly made a name for itself, reaching the storied stages of the Willy Street Fair just a year later. The then-young band played their song "504," a tribute to the recently-lost O'Cayz Corral.
A live concert video of their performance follows below.
This video was created by Ken Labarre, a freelance producer and musician who is known from his band Tangy by the nom de guerre of The Jammy Bastard. He describes the clip:
Posted this in memory of one of the most entertaining rock/punk bands in Madison. The Recruits broke up recently, but this clip shows why they were so entertaining, unpredicatable, and fun every time you saw them play. This show was at the Willy Street Fair, in 2000 and the band played ahead of the headliner Noah John.
A memoriam to the group remains at thenewrecruits.com and other details are available on their Madison Music Project profile. "We will play your wedding," the group vowed, "but we may or may not play anything you've heard before and by the time it's all said and done, somebody will be offended. But the price is right." Amen.
