Doubt: Meryl Streep plays Sister Aloysius, unwavering principal of a school where a new young priest (Philip Seymour Hoffman) is suspected of pedophilia. There are many small, telling moments, but a collection of acting styles creates an unevenness of tone and interpretation.

Yes Man: A slumping bank loan officer (Jim Carrey) heeds the life-changing mantra of a motivational guru (Terence Stamp) and says "yes" to every opportunity that presents itself. A good dose of ad-libbing keeps the tone appealingly wobbly, but Yes Man proves utterly formulaic.
