The Curious Case of Benjamin Button: A triumph in the art of makeup, digital and analog, this picaresque fable stars Brad Pitt as the eponymous hero, who was born old and grows younger every day. The movie has a little trouble getting off the ground, and it's much too long, but Pitt's performance is quite moving, keeping us constantly aware of life's utter transience.
Last Chance Harvey: Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson play a Mr. and Miss Lonely-hearts destined to complete each other across The Pond in this syrupy, if not quite schmaltzy, romantic comedy. Writer-director Joel Hopkins keeps them apart as long as possible, but these two are clearly meant for each other; it says so right there in the script.
