The Reader: This adaptation wrestles with the notion of Germany's guilt, and although things don't quite add up, the movie's beautifully rendered. It features David Kross as a 15-year-old kid who has an affair with a woman (Kate Winslet) twice his age, only to discover that she'd been a guard at Auschwitz.

The Spirit: Frank Miller's big-screen adaptation of Will Eisner's comic-book crimefighter has plenty of spirit but no soul at all. A long, incoherent mess of a film.
