Since the Wisconsin Capitol protests started in February 2011, politics has consumed the lives of many Democrats and progressives throughout the state. Now that the recall election is over, it is time to gain perspective -- not only on the devastation wrought by Gov. Scott Walker's agenda, but about the direction of those who continue to stand against it. For nearly a month, I've pondered, brainstormed, discussed, and debated where we go from here. more

About three weeks ago, I went on a trip to the East Coast and visited the camps at Occupy Wall Street and Occupy Boston. While I was gone, Occupy Madison launched at Reynolds Park, and moved shortly thereafter to the State Street corner of the Capitol Square, with general assemblies held every evening to discuss the business of the demonstration. Now its participants are moving again, and have landed in the old Don Miller lot on East Washington as a hopefully permanent "home" in their quest to maintain a visible presence downtown. more

Earlier this year, a call went out from "Adbusters" to "Occupy Wall Street." What that meant was left up to whoever chose to respond to the call to action. On Saturday, September 17, a few thousand took to the streets in New York, and solidarity actions were held in various cities around the world, including Madison. Two weeks later, a few hundred individuals remain camped out in Zuccotti Park, near Wall Street in lower Manhattan. more

When I attended the Joint Finance Committee's public hearing at State Fair Park in April, I was moved by both the speakers from Voces de la Frontera and by the massive showing of opposition from ordinary citizens who stood in the audience, silently raising their fists in their air. That moment was powerful.There is power in doing the right thing the right way.We can continue to make our opposition known by contacting our legislators, staging protests and rallies, canvassing and phone banking for recalls, among numerous other activities. more
