"If I can get and keep decent dancers, we can give Madison more for less money than virtually anywhere else," Kanopy Dance Center artistic director and co-founder Chris Stevens tells staff writer Kent Williams. But recruiting and retaining good dancers, she says, isn't getting easier: "Now, with the UW dance department gone, there's no reason for dancers to move here anymore." Stevens leaves the company and Madison in 1992 - just as the UW Dance Program launches a renaissance under the leadership of Sally Banes. Now under the artistic direction of Lisa Andrea Thurrell and Robert E. Cleary, Kanopy is a resident company at the Overture Center.
