Today's image is titled Awaiting Spring and was photographed by Bo Mackison.
Along with the Dane County Farmers Market, the surest sign of the warm season in Madison is the opening of the Memorial Union Terrace. That's just around the corner, as seen in this photo taken on Sunday that shows the iconic chairs and tables of the Terrace taken out of winter storage, not long after the ice on Lake Mendota was finally smothered by the new spring.
As described by Mackison in its caption:
These yellow, green and orange sunburst chairs are symbols of the High Life on this college campus. In pleasant weather students, faculty, townspeople all mingle here, quaffing beers and other beverages, munching on bratwursts, listening to live music, appreciating a constant stream of entertainers, and generally enjoying a few hours of downtime in a convivial, beautiful setting.
The chairs and tables were removed from winter storage this week and await some re-arranging. Then all we will need is a warm front with some strong southwestern winds, and there won't be an empty seat in sight. We've waited long enough and we're all ready for a little Union lounging -- people watching, lake-side and in the sun.
The Memorial Union Terrace opens in April every year, as UW students and employees taking their place on the lakeside as soon as conditions are warm enough, which should be right around now. Music season on the terrace kicks off this month too, with the opening show on Saturday, April 26 to feature performances by Leroy Smokes with Dean Welch & Rhythm Method. Welcome to summer.
