Wild Sunset Over Pier
Today's image is titled Wild Sunset Over Pier and was photographed by Nataraj Hauser.
Cinematic sunsets of impossibly brilliant and almost unnatural colors swathed the skies over Madison a week ago, as seen in this photo shot last Friday on the southern shores of Lake Mendota where the clouds and waters surrounding Picnic Point on the horizon are painted in myriad shades of orange. "While there were a handful of people who stopped what they were doing," notes Hauser in the caption, "there were hundreds of people who didn't seem to notice the sky."
This scene was brought to life thanks to a series of massive forest fires burning in far northern Canada around Great Slave Lake and Lake Athabasca, and the plume of smoke they sent drifting southeast on a beeline for Wisconsin. By Saturday, the plume was thick enough to nearly obscure the sunset, as detailed in a report from the National Weather Service.
