Moon over Monona
Today's image is titled Moon over Monona and was photographed by Karen Darcy.
"I'll never get used to the sight of the red moon rising over the Lake Monona horizon," writes Darcy in the caption to this photo, taken of the last full moon on July 29. "I'm startled by its beauty each and every time."
Today marks the return of a full moon, its August appearance alternately known as the "Corn moon" or "Sturgeon moon." Skywatchers that were awake early Tuesday morning might have caught a glimpse of a lunar eclipse, which started at 4:52 a.m. Central Daylight time and lasted about 90 minutes. A few photos of this morning's sight were captured by Stephen Dorshorst: "I doubt many others stayed awake all night to watch the eclipse, but I did, and I thought it was cool."
