Today's image is titled waylan wailin' and was photographed by Kandy Watson.
Waylan St. Palan & His Magic Elves made their sole Madison appearance of 2006 at Isthmus Publishing's Holiday Party, held at the Brink Lounge on Saturday, Dec. 16. Watson describes the photo:
In Madison last night, we went to hear the holiday stylings of Waylan St. Palan and his Magic Elves, with some friends. The show has become a somewhat popular annual event. Somewhat, meaning there were people at the show who couldn't relate to his rendition of Silent Night and will probably be in no hurry to return next year. But they obviously weren't drinking enough to thoroughly grasp the idea of lounge Christmas music. Hipsters were there in droves with martinis in hand. Waylan included.
The band is a holiday-only side project created by Waylan Nate Palan, the incredibly prolific musician who is also a major force behind many other bands in Madison, including Hometown Sweethearts, Electric Automatic, The God Damns, Gimme the Car, Paddyknockers, and of course, The Kissers.
Another show attendee describes the act as "Nate Palan getting drunk and singing Christmas songs in a lounge-act type manner." This is indeed very close to the singer's own description. There's less than a year to wait to see St. Palan & His Magic Elves back in action.
