Smoke Signals and Radio Waves
Today's image is titled Smoke Signals and Radio Waves and was photographed by Dave Esmond.
This photo shows the upper reaches of the Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) on the UW-Madison campus, located just to the east of Camp Randall. Chimneys and steam outlets are working overtime in these frigid early February conditions, their billowing contents shrouding the lower reaches of the sky as a visible reminder of the cold. Thankfully, the SSEC is on hand to provide local weather data, not to mention mountains of data on a more planetary scale. Much more information about the work conducted at the building is available from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies.
