Today's image is titled demolition and was photographed by Nicole Possely.
Stone and masonry rubble fill the interior of the ruins of St. Raphael's Cathedral in this photo shot on Tuesday. The onetime parish cathedral for the Catholic Diocese of Madison was destroyed by an arsonist in the spring of 2005, and has since sit vacant until demolition got underway this summer. Though there have been efforts by preservation advocates in the city to halt this work, multiple requests for legal injunctions have been dismissed in Dane County courts.
"It's really sad to see a landmark of the city so bare and vulnerable," notes Possely in the caption to the photo. "A side of the wall is completely gone, with its stones laying in the parking lot. It's depressing to see what was such a wonderful building in such a state."
More information about the status of the space and any future cathedral is detailed by Isthmus Catholic, as well as ongoing coverage from The Catholic Herald.
