Nearly backstage at COTS
Today's image is titled "Nearly backstage at COTS" and was photographed by Kristian Knutsen.
The first of six Concerts on the Square this summer was held before an expectant crowd huddled on the Capitol grounds in downtown Madison. Unlike last year, the stage for the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra and guest musicians faces the King Street spoke of the Square, rather than looking down North Hamilton Street towards James Madison Park, Lake Mendota and Maple Bluff. This photo shows stage left and a section of an adjacent ticketed seating area.
Concerts on the Square draws plenty of photographers in addition to a large segment of the audience more focused on eating, drinking and talking than listening to the music. Brad Vogel published a photo essay about the concert, noting the amount of alcohol present, a possibly related anecdote about one audience altercation, and the head-banging performance by featured cello soloist Stephanie Smith. More views from the show are to be found in another attendee's series of 10 observations from the show, focusing upon the pre-concert claim-staking, picnicking implements, and the pleasant sounds of orchestral music away from cramped indoor settings.
