a small protest
Today's image is titled a small protest and was photographed by Marie Kelleher.
This photo shows a Tibet solidarity rally that was held on the UW Library Mall around 6 p.m. last Saturday, March 15. This relatively small gathering was held several days after a much larger protest around the Capitol Square the previous Monday morning. Marking the anniversary of the 1959 Tibet Uprising, this demonstration attracted some 100 people, reported The Capital Times, one of many coordinated around the world. Demonstrations on that day in Lhasa, meanwhile, quickly transformed into broader unrest and violence around Tibet and China that is the most significant opposition in decades to the rule by the People's Republic of China.
Since these new troubles have erupted, Tibetans and American supporters have held a daily vigil at this location in front of the UW Memorial Library. More information about these solidarity demonstrations and their effect on the Tibetan community in the region, as well as a planned return visit by the Dalai Lama this summer, is provided by the chapter at UW-Madison.
