Sconz Nation and Sconnie Nation are by no means synonymous. They are cousins, with distinct identities. Nevertheless, if not for the word Sconnie, The Sconz, as you know it today, might not exist.
So I welcome the founding of a new bar on Gorham St., Sconnie Bar, whose owner, Troy Vosseler, is also one of the founders of the Sconnie store on State St, which sells customized print T-shirt and other Sconnie accessories. The Alcohol License Review Committee will be assessing Vosseler's application for a liquor license tonight.
The bar, which will be located next-door to Chaser's on Gorham, will have a capacity of 500 and plans to get 65 percent of its revenue from alcohol sales. Interestingly, in addition to the 20 percent it plans to get from food sales, it has also specified 10 percent from "other" sources. Might that refer to Sconnie merchandise?
I tried in vain to contact Vosseler. Assuming the license goes forward, I hope to talk to him in the future about his vision for the bar. Hopefully it includes unbeatable specials on Blatz, brandy and brats. If it doesn't, then Madison consumers ought to consider suing for false advertisement.
