When it comes to pets, it seems, all the attention goes to the dogs. With doggie couture and designer canine carriers on every celebutante's arm, our little feline friends might feel a bit left out. Want to show your kitty some extra love? Then visit MadCat for pet supplies that pamper man's other best friend.
If you're on the lookout for novel pet products, this store - in three locations - is your haven, with hard-to-find items like organic food, gourmet treats and even pet strollers. Although most merchandise is for cats, there are also supplies for dogs and small animals.
One look and you know this isn't some pet supply warehouse. Instead, you'll find a homegrown, cozy atmosphere with animal-loving employees always available for advice and kitties that lazily sleep in locally handmade cat trees. There are leashes in a rainbow of colors, a myriad of mice, and toys you never knew existed.
MadCat opened in 2002 and is co-owned by Joe Kazda and Ted O'Donnell. O'Donnell worked for Petco corporate in San Diego and was the purchasing manager of the defunct Pets.com. "We want to get to know you and what you need," he says.
MadCat is also active in animal rescue (working with Friends of Ferals) and is vocal about the "No Kill" movement to end the killing of animals in shelters.
This is a store that pacifies not only pets, but their owners, too. You might just walk out purring a little yourself.
Keep your furry friends happy with these creature comforts: Fuzzy chair cat lounge ($39); Critterbug laser light ($10); Pink camo hoodie for small dogs ($12).
