When the "In Memoriam" sequence that honors motion picture contributors passing away in 2006 airs at the 79th Academy Awards on Sunday evening, actor Peter Boyle will be due a warm ovation.
He will be remembered in part for his role as "The Monster" in the 1974 comedy Young Frankenstein.
Directed by Mel Brooks, the 1974 film parodies classic horror movies of Hollywood's Golden Age, the 1931 adaptation of Frankenstein starring Boris Karloff and others released by Universal Studios above all others.
Young Frankenstein is undergoing a minor renaissance as the film reaches its early thirties, with this restoration accompanied by plans for a Broadway musical adaptation.
In the spring of 2006, Mel Brooks started composing the score for the production, with its script subsequently drafted by the end of last year. The musical is currently expected to premiere by the end of 2007.
A restored version of the comedy classic will be retuning to the big screen at the 2007 Wisconsin Film Festival.
