CRASHprez has never been one to hide his feelings.
On “ILLEGAL,” his new release featuring Patrice Rushie, he takes aim at many of the problems — most of them race-based — that have plagued Madison and the rest of the country since he last dropped new music almost a year ago.
Over a slow, mellow beat from producer drew_, the 22-year-old Maryland native and 2015 UW graduate tackles a number of hot issues, including the recent police killings of unarmed people of color, the overuse of prescription medication, the resilience of black people despite ongoing, increased racism and how the prison system mirrors slavery.
The track’s hook sums up his feelings about the current political debate over immigration: “Love your people / Fuck that evil / No one breathing is illegal.”
CRASH’s anger is like a kettle boiling over, but he also takes time to offer soft tributes to Tony Robinson, the unarmed black teen shot by a Madison police officer last year, and others as the song fades out.
You can see CRASH perform the new track Friday night, April 29, at the Lake Street Bash on the UW campus.
NOTE: The song is NSFW due to profanity.
