On Pharoahe Monch's first album in eight years, desire is about more than sex. It's about a thirst for freedom, justice, love, identity and, yes, sex.
And in Pharoahe Monch's world, most people are alienated from the object of their desires. The album opens with a celestial choir singing about freedom. Then the funky horns 'n' drums invoke the earthly battles of everyday life.
"If you represent the struggle, then push!" exclaims Troy Jamerson, 34, who MCs as Pharoahe Monch.
Jamerson exhibits a stunning dexterity on this album. "Welcome to the Terrordome" is a righteous Public Enemy spinoff. "Body Baby" is a Gnarls Barkley-esque dance track. "So Good" is sexy neo-soul.
Eight years was worth the wait.
