Madison folk-pop duo Seasaw is releasing a new single, “Waiting Song,” one day before an April 16 performance at the High Noon Saloon.
The song comes from their upcoming third album, Too Much of a Good Thing, due out July 22 on vinyl and CD. After collaborating long-distance for years, Meg Golz and Eve Wilczewski wrote, recorded and mixed the new album in a basement on Madison’s near east side.
“This album is a manifestation of Meg and me being in the same headspace,” says Wilczewski.
Both women are Illinois natives who met while working at an Italian restaurant in Freeport. Golz moved to Madison in 2011 to attend Madison Media Institute, and Wilczewski followed last summer.
Wilczewski says the writing process fostered a closeness between the two. Lyrically, the songs on Too Much of a Good Thing focus on matters of the heart. “Waiting Song,” for example, playfully urges a lover to pay a little more attention: “Come on, baby, won’t you buy me flowers with that money spent on whiskey sours that you’re buying at those wasted hours?”
“Waiting Song” is rife with satisfying syncopation and bold instruments. Violin and synthesizer carry the melody while cymbal and fervent drumming drive the tempo. But other parts of Too Much of a Good Thing hark back to their older tunes, with sweet harmonies, reverberating guitar strings and straightforward drums.
“We have been able to experiment with new instrumentation, while perfecting the things about our sound we’ve really grown to love,” says Golz.
