In the five years since the last Sparklehorse record, Mark Linkous' battle with depression and drug addiction has been no secret among his faithful fans. His state of mind is evident on Dreamt for Light Years. The ever-so-slowly building tempo and volume of "See The Light" suggest someone coming out of the numbness of deep depression.
If there's a weakness to this album, it's that some of its most quiet moments don't emerge from their shell enough to engage the listener. Fortunately, Dreamt for Light Years includes several rock songs that let the passion fly. The disc is pure indie rock, evoking the Eels and the Flaming Lips, and it won't disappoint fans who have weathered the Sparklehorse drought.
