The New York Times featured a travel story yesterday by Stephen Regenold, headlined "On the Trail of Wisconsin's Icy Past," focusing on the Taking readers on a hike along a trail section at Interstate State Park, Regenold reports that about 600 miles of Ice Age Trail has been established in segments, out of a proposed total of between 1,000 and 1,200 miles. Along the way, he presents a primer on the trail's glacial geology and "abstruse topography," discusses the growing popularity among recreational hikers and other users of a trail that remains a work in progress. Illustrated with color photographs and a general trail map, Regenold's engaging article paints the Ice Age Trail as a complement to the Appalachian Trail and concludes with a fundamental glossary of glacial geologic terms. At the least, it is an education for readers who may have been unaware of the Ice Age Trail. But if it lures NYT readers to traverse the state's glacial terrain, it could prove to be a boost for the trail itself.
