Green Bay Packer great Brett Favre will trade in the gridiron for the green in late June when he returns to Madison to play in a celebrity golf scramble. The nine-hole event on June 25 will follow the day’s final tournament play at the inaugural American Family Insurance Championship, which will take place at the University Ridge Golf Course.
Favre will be joined by former Packer Mark Tauscher, a co-owner of Isthmus; 12-time PGA Tour winner Steve Stricker; and two-time U.S. Open champion Andy North. Stricker, an ambassador for American Family, was instrumental in bringing the no-cut, 54-hole PGA Tour Champions event to Wisconsin. The PGA has not had a regular stop in Wisconsin since the Greater Milwaukee Open ended its 42-year run in 2009.
Fans can vie for the chance to serve as caddies for Favre and Stricker during the scramble event by participating in an online auction. Visit charitybuzz.com and search “American Family Insurance Championship.” Funds raised will go to charity. The scramble will begin around 2 p.m. on the 10th hole.
The American Family Insurance Championship features an 81-player field and a $2 million purse. Two professional-amateur events will take place on June 22-23, followed by three days of tournament play, June 24-26. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Steve Stricker American Family Insurance Foundation for distribution to the American Family Children’s Hospital and other charities. Isthmus is doing the ticketing for the event.
Editor's note: This story was changed to clarify that the Madison PGA tournament will be the first regular PGA stop since the Greater Milwaukee Open ended its run in 2009.
