"Get out of your car, and get onto your bike" was the primary refrain at this year's quick looks at a bowling ball bike, a high seat post bike, and a tandem bike in which one of the riders faces backwards. The first two creations, along with many more, were all in action at the rally on Saturday.
Watch a brief video clip of the rally as it makes its first turn from Carroll to Main on the Square.
Only the first eighth of the parade was complete at this point, as the bicyclists would proceed to make their way around the farmers' market and return for a second loop around the Square.
The Madison Arts Bikes rally was an appropriate complement to the other major wheel-focused event in downtown Madison on Saturday. While the bicyclists were urging farmers' market patrons to participate in Bike to Work Week, if not simply transition to self-propelled commuting as a general rule, the second annual Cars on State Classic Car Show was also drawing a crowd along most of the length of State Street. Our dependence on and relationships with wheeled contraptions, whether in the artful design of the past or through the artful whimsy of the present, couldn't be any more salient with the arrival of summer.
