The 2018 St. Patrick's Day Parade.
Despite its general all-around awesomeness, Madison does have some shortcomings, one of which is almost no parades. One that has stuck around is for St. Patrick’s Day — this is the 24th annual. You are likely to see pipes and drums, fiddlers, Irish people, leprechauns, people wearing green throwing candy, DIY “floats” and — well, it’s all sort of free-form. Unlike some years, the weather should be temperate. Come early for an Irish flag ceremony at noon in the Capitol Rotunda. Éirinn go Brách!
media release: Sunday, March 17, 2024 The Schedule that day includes:
Noon The Dane County Shamrock Club will raise the flag of Ireland in the Capitol Rotunda, an annual tradition.
1:30 St Patrick’s Day Parade Begins - Capitol Square
Brady Mallory, an Emmy Award-winning broadcast journalist, will serve as the grand marshal of the 24th annual Madison St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which will take place at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, March 17 on the Capitol Square.
“As we near the 25th anniversary of running the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Madison, we are excited to bring live music, floats and plenty of family-friendly festivities to the Capitol Square,” Joe Herr, event spokesperson and member of the organizing committee, said. “The parade has always been about giving back to the community, and we continue to do that each year.”
Mallory currently serves as a nightly TV anchor and reporter on Channel 3 and FOX47. Before Madison, he worked at KELO, the CBS affiliate in Sioux Falls.
At noon on the day of the parade, the Dane County Shamrock Club will raise an Irish flag in the Capitol Rotunda. That will be followed by a raffle drawing at the corner of Wisconsin Avenue and Mifflin Street at 1:20 p.m.
Similar to past years, the free event will traverse counterclockwise around the Capitol Square, exiting at East Washington Ave. Proceeds will benefit the University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center, Gigi’s Playhouse-Madison and Logan’s Heart and Smiles.
