A Way with Words is an entertaining and informational call-in National Public Radio show about language, heard weekly across the country by broadcast and podcast. On the air since 1998, the show is an optimistic, light-hearted and information-based look at modern communication. Described as “CarTalk meets Antiques Roadshow,” the hour-long show is lively, current, and delightful.
Co-hosts Martha Barnette and Grant Barrett examine grammar, word origins, regional dialects, old sayings, and speaking and writing well through lenses of history, culture, and family. They settle disputes, play word quizzes, and discuss language news and controversies.
Barnette is a journalist and an author who has written several books about language. Barrett is a lexicographer, linguist and dictionary editor who specializes in slang and new words. This is your opportunity to enjoy them in person.
The event is presented by the Wisconsin Union Theater’s Performing Arts Committee. This program was supported in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts.
