media release: Madison Public Art Project in partnership with Union Cab Cooperative is hosting a community art opening day for the new mural entitled, City Connections.
City Connections is a public art project that strengthens the community through highlighting our human connections. Madison Public Art Project commissioned the mural and hosted audio pop-ups at various locations throughout the city in partnership with Union Cab Cooperative. The community was invited to drive the design by joining this process and sharing audio clips about the meaning of connection. Amy Zaremba, a Madison-based painter, found her inspiration from the community’s shared stories which shaped her design.
Join our mural unveiling Saturday 10/3 from 1:00-3:00PM with art-making activities, a guided mural tour, artist talk, light refreshments, and more! Registration appreciated. This event is free, and your give-what-you-can donations support the nonprofit to provide arts related projects, events, and programming. Suggested donations of $5 to $20 for those who are able to give.
The mural exhibition will be free to view 365 days/year, accessible from the street, and will be a semi-permanent work on view at Union Cab Cooperative on Pennsylvania Ave.
MPAP Founder and Creative Director Jillian Talarczyk said, “For obvious reasons, connection among neighbors is needed more now than ever. This bright mural will bring further connection across the north side in Emerson, Eken Park, and across all Madison neighborhoods as more people continue to visit the area and the Madison Public Market. Zaremba has an exciting colo rpalette and took a very thoughtful approach to this work by both integrating audio stories into this triptych mural while still making a piece that is accessible for all who visit to see themselves reflected in the work.”
John Hershberger, president of the Union Cab Cooperative says, “we’re proud and honored to be part of the City Connections mural project. For nearly 50 years, Union Cab has been built around the idea that people are stronger when they work together, whether that means our members owning and shaping their cooperative together, or helping people stay connected to work, family, services, and the broader Madison community. The theme of this mural feels very much at home here.”
Amy Zaremba, says about the project, “I love creating public art that celebrates connection and brings a little more color and joy into people’s everyday lives. My hope is that this mural brightens someone’s day, makes them feel connected to their community, and gives them a chance to see a little bit of themselves in the work.”

About the Artist:
This Public Art Mural features the work of Amy Zaremba, a Madison-based painter, who found her art inspiration from the community audio sessions that inspired this mural design. Zaremba is known for omitting specific figurative features and working in a vibrant color palette to create a diverse and inclusive mural expression. "Amy was born and raised in Wisconsin and grew up exploring the lakes and forests of the Northwoods. She now calls Madison home, where she lives with her husband, Steve, their daughter, Josie, and dog, Lola. Amy holds a Bachelor’s degree in Studio Art and English Literature from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2005), as well as a J.D. from DePaul College of Law (2009). She is the owner and creative force behind Zaremba Art, LLC, where she specializes in murals, acrylic painting, and custom signage. Her murals vary widely in theme and technique but share a common intention: to brighten public spaces, spark reflection, and foster a sense of belonging. Some invite collective storytelling and celebrate shared histories, while others offer simple moments of joy and connection."
