Wurk
The Madison based jam-grassers Armchair Boogie hosts a lineup of bluegrass and fusion acts so banging it’s scary. For the annual Boograss Ball, the hard-touring hosts will be joined by equally well-traveled bluegrass festival favorites Henhouse Prowlers. Madison’s WURK turns Phish-like wanderings inside out by smacking the funk into it (lots of it); they just released a groovy new single, “Song for Squares,” last week.

more on Wurk:
Acclaimed funk-fusion band Wurk has been busy on the road to promote their newest single “Song for Squares”. The energetic track first will be released exclusively on Friday, October 18, on Bandcamp and their own website, then released on every streaming platform the following Friday, October 25. Wurk has completed the Minnesotan leg of their tour and will visit several cities in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Indiana over the next three weeks, including a stop at the Majestic Theatre on Friday, October 25.
Wurk’s new single “Song for Squares,” written by guitarist Frank Laufenberg and engineered at Paradyme Productions, ventures into uncharted territory for the band, exploring a mixture of pop and punk with reggae undertones. Throughout the single, the band flexes its adaptability while staying true to its foundations in groove and riffs. “Song for Squares”’ raw emotive undertones and lyrics pry at the foundation of current American society's lust for divisiveness, drama and crave for acceptance.
To celebrate the anticipated release, Wurk will perform at the BooGrass Ball, an annual Halloween party at the Majestic Theatre in Madison thrown by the Wisconsin bluegrass stars Armchair Boogie. Chicagoan bluegrass ambassadors Henhouse Prowlers will also showcase their talents. The event takes place on October 25, 2024; doors open at 7pm with Wurk’s set starting promptly at 8pm. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 day of show.
Wurk is a 6-piece funk-fusion group which formed in Madison, WI in 2016. Inspired by Umphrey’s McGee, Snarky Puppy, Lettuce, Phish and many others, their innovative original songs and ambitious interpretations of popular covers offer an impressive blend of jazz fusion, prog rock, jam rock and more, all with the consistent underlying grooves of funk. Wurk has opened for acts including The Motet and Andy Frasco & the U.N., and helped pack venues across Wisconsin. Described by Isthmus Magazine as “summer-jam-perfect” and two-time recipient of the Madison Area Music Association (MAMA) Artist of the Year Award (2019, 2022), Wurk fills the gap between complexity and groove, impressing fans and keeping them dancing all night.
