Armchair Boogie
If your NYE desire is for some rootsy yet progressive sounds from Wisconsin, the Majestic’s lineup is for you. Madison’s own Armchair Boogie puts a unique spin on bluegrass that can verge on psychedelic funk (for an example, sample their extended take on “All My Friends,” opening the just-released album Live at Pine Creek Lodge). Them Coulee Boys also have new music on the way; No Fun in the Chrysalis is out at the end of February, heralded by the rockin' single “I Am Not Sad.” Also with singer-songwriter Joseph Huber.
media release: Hailing from Eau Claire, Them Coulee Boys are back on Feb. 28, 2025, with a new album, No Fun In The Chrysalis, an expansive new collection that finds the band picking up where their 2021 release, Namesake, left off. The band’s co-founder, Soren Staff, wrote about his ongoing struggles with self-worth and anxiety on “I Am Not Sad,” the first single from the album. The band is once again working with Grammy-winning producer Brian Joseph (Sufjan Stevens, Humbird, Bon Iver), whose production on Namesake shepherded the band beyond their folk-grass, Americana roots to “go electric.” No Fun In The Chrysalis was recorded at The Hive in the band’s hometown of Eau Claire. The album has a warm, comfortable sound that is both intimate, and celebratory. Them Coulee Boys have built a loyal live following through their own relentless touring and as support for Trampled by Turtles (Dave Simonett produced 2019’s Die Happy), Los Lobos, Old Crow Medicine Show and Band of Heathens., They were Wisconsin Area Music Industry’s “Bluegrass Americana Band of the Year” in 2021.
No Fun In The Chrysalis captures what has been a signature of their dynamic live shows, an ability to sing honestly about their feelings and emotions and it has endeared them to a growing base of fans and friends.
