Artifacts: A Creative Writing Workshop
DATE: Weekly on Sundays, February 7-28
TIME: 3:30 PM - 5:00 PM
LOCATION: Central Library, 201 W. Mifflin St., Madison, WI 53703, 266-6300
DESCRIPTION: Open a photo album of a family you’ve never met. There is no one to explain to you who these people are. A few pictures have dates, names and locations, but the rest are blank. In one, a man on a tractor tips his hat. In another, a little boy in a diaper cries in front of a cake. In yet another, an aproned woman cooks food over a fire by a lake. What holds the past together when it disappears? This workshop challenges writers to build stories from found objects, including photographs and newspaper clippings. What we are after is not biography or historical realism, but an understanding that the past can be as great a tool for creative output as our imaginations. Note on attendance: We encourage you to attend all four consecutive sessions with Mason, but it is not mandatory. Once the class fills, there will be a short wait list. For questions or to modify your registration, please contact Aaron Fai, volunteer coordinator for the Bubbler's creative writing series, at aaronfai@gmail.com.
