ISTHMUS PICK:
Divided we fall: John Nichols and Robert McChesney discuss the effects of the digital divide on the future of democracy and the need for a new economy in this book launch for People Get Ready: The Fight Against a Jobless Economy and a Citizenless Democracy, a WORT fundraiser.
On February 19th, at 7:00pm at the Madison Public Library, 201 W. Mifflin Street, WORT-FM Community Radio, together with the Wisconsin Book Festival, will host a book launch for their latest volume:
People Get Ready: The Fight Against a Jobless Economy and a Citizenless Democracy
People Get Ready reveals that the choices made in the next few years will decide not just how technology is utilized and how economies are organized, but whether democracy will cease to function in any meaningful sense. This book, by two of America's leading champions of Net Neutrality and efforts to close the digital divide, links an urgent call for action with an outline of what must be done to move from crisis to hope. John Nichols and Robert W. McChesney argue that the United States needs a new economy in which the benefits of revolutionary technologies are shared by everyone, applied to effectively address environmental and social problems, and used to rejuvenate and extend democratic institutions and practices.
The book launch will be the first event in a series of presentations that the two authors will make around the country, but they wanted Madison, and WORT, to be their first stop. The event is free and open to the public. All book sales at the event will benefit the station. Call 608-256-2001 for more information.
