media release: Buckhorn State Park will host its first-ever 2-day music festival this fall as an exciting way to raise funds for the park and rustle up community engagement with the grounds. From Friday to Saturday, September 25 and 26, the amphitheater stage will be the home to Buck Fest, featuring many Madison-based artists, including headlining acts Wurk and The Earthlings.
The festival was conceptualized by Taylor Adams and Hillary Mitchell, who wanted to bring community members together for a good cause while celebrating the Wisconsin music scene. “This idea started as a camping trip that included many of our incredibly talented musician friends,” Adams recalls, “Friends of Buckhorn were kind enough to indulge us in expanding our idea into a weekend of live music. We thought this would be a jubilant ode to summer and an ushering in of autumn. Now more than ever, it is so important to bring people together, engage in acts of creativity, and show a dedicated appreciation for nature and all of its flora and fauna.”
“Our mission is to emphasize the importance of community and environmental justice at a crucial crossroads in our world and current political climate,” Hillary adds, “Gathering in nature to dance and sing seems like the perfect way to do that. This fest is our resistance to the trends of the times. Let’s buck the norm and get weird in the woods together!”.
Concertgoers can expect four hours of music on Friday, September 25 from 6-10pm and a full ten hours the next day from noon to 10pm. Music acts will include funk-fusion jammers Wurk, psychedelic-pop rockers The Earthlings, Indie dream-pop duo Pink Halo, folk female vocal trio Ladyslipper, country rock songwriters Free Dirt, Americana sextet Supper Club, and DJ Kayla Kush. Each night will end with a bonfire at the beach next to the amphitheatre. There is a suggested donation of $20 for all attendees, with all proceeds benefiting Friends of Buckhorn, a non-profit that partners with the park to complete environmental and beautification projects, and sponsor educational and recreational activities for park visitors. Attendees will be required to show a state park vehicle admission pass, and limited camping options are available for reservation. Both can be purchased on the DNR website. Digital and cash donation opportunities will be available during the event.
